The 2010 Wrecked Tangalooma Ocean Swim - Sunday March 21st
Monday March 22nd 2010 The inaugural Wrecked Tangalooma Ocean Swim was held last Sunday in the first event of a new three-part Queensland Ocean Swim Series. The event was billed as a ‘unique event in a spectacular location' and competitors were not disappointed.
Greeted with idyllic course conditions at the start line, swimmers were in for a memorable journey out and around the famous sunken Tangalooma wrecks. While some competitors were distracted by the abundant schools of fish and passing turtles, it was business as usual for the current Australian 5km and 10km open water champion, Trent Grimsey. Grimsey stamped his mark early, leading from the start with an eager bunch of talented youth swimmers on his heels. Grimsey was pushed all the way to the finish by Jackson Van Der Zant who chased Grimsey up the beach in a sprint finish crossing the line just one second behind. This was a commendable effort by Van Der Zant given Grimsey's recent successes in open water events all over the world. It wasn't quite as tight in the Women's field with Robyn Saultry putting in a powerful performance to finish 15 seconds clear of her nearest rival, Kimberlee Liedke. As the beach filled up with finishers, it was clear that this event was not only for elite swimmers. The sheltered course and tropical setting made for an ideal introduction to ocean swimming for many of the weekend warriors who had made the trip out to Moreton Island. Overall winner Grimsey, celebrated the inaugural event saying "an ocean swim series is long overdue for Queensland and I couldn't think of better location to kick it off". Swimmers are now setting their sights on Coolangatta where excitement is building for The Cooly Classic on Sunday April 11.
