The 2011 Straddie Salute Multisport Festival

By Ellie O'Gorman

On Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 October 2011, Weekend Warrior Events did what they do best: the perfect execution of the location race. Or, in this case, three races.

This year, The Straddie Salute Multisport Festival (presented by Stradbroke Ferries) was in its fourth year and has expanded since the inaugural off-road triathlon in 2008 to a weekend festival with three events, over two days, in one great location - North Stradbroke Island.

North Stradbroke Island is accessible from Cleveland, 30 minutes south-east of Brisbane City CBD. Ferries run regularly and there is the option of a water taxi or a vehicular ferry. It's just far away enough from the office to feel that sense of relief and escape. When the ferries land at Dunwich on North Stradbroke, Point Lookout is only 15 minutes by car.

It's the perfect weekend away with some of the best surfing, whalewatching, snorkelling, diving and 4WDing in Queensland, as well as boasting one of the most iconic spots for a post-race beer: the Straddie Beach Hotel! I wish I was there right now...

A dirty weekend away...

By Ellie O'Gorman

Forget the stilettos and cocktail dress, this weekend is about trail shoes, sunscreen, bikinis, boardies and an esky full of beer and prawns.

On Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 October 2011, Weekend Warrior Events will host what is, in my opinion, one of the BEST events on the Queensland sporting calendar. Now in its fourth year, the Straddie Salute Multisport Festival is in its best form yet. There are 3 events over 2 days, all happening on the pristine beaches of North Stradbroke Island. And believe me, this is not your average triathlon: no following white lines on main roads or swimming in uninspiring canals! It's a weekend of dirty, spectacular, adventure goodness!

So take notes - here's the drill...

The 2010 Straddie Salute - Sunday October 10th

While most took cover from some of the heaviest rainfall to hit QLD in decades, over 350 competitors headed outdoors and took on the third annual Straddie Salute Off-road Triathlon held on North Stradbroke Island last Sunday.

With water conditions less than ideal for the planned 600m ocean swim, organisers opted for ‘dry' land and competitors were instead faced with a short on-road dash before embarking on their 18km mountain bike ride and 8km coastal run.

The Straddie Salute - keeping sport real and putting the fun back!

By Ellie O'Gorman

I'm a weekend warrior athlete. When Weekend Warriors announced the inaugural North Stradbroke Island triathlon in 2008, I knew I had found a special event - why had no one thought of this before?! North Stradbroke Island is one of Queensland's gems and has been my family's holiday destination for over fifteen years - and I have seen it change and grow from a fishing village with a pub and some low-rise apartments where a few families would greet each other each school holiday, to an island that has a delicatessen, a gelati store and bookings have to be made yearly.
