Queensland Ocean Swim Series Launched: JUST BRING GOGGLES...

'Just bring goggles' is the tagline for this year's Queensland Ocean Swim Series and, in a cheeky bid to entice more swimmers from the training pool to the sea, organisers say you are welcome to take them literally!

With ocean swimming becoming increasingly popular in the sunshine state the annual series, now in its third year, is aimed squarely at the weekend warrior with a range of courses to suit all abilities.

The series features events at Tangalooma, Coolangatta and Caloundra and to highlight how easy it is to get involved, organisers Weekend Warrior Events, are offering a new "Goggles Only" category which is sure to be a talking point. Event Director, John Guise, is quick to assure that anyone up for the "Goggles Only" challenge won't be exposed to the rest of the field though with some well placed screening on event day.

"Just bring goggles, says it all "said Guise. You don't need an expensive bike or running shoes and this year you don't even need your swimmers!"

The new black:  The Queensland Ocean Swim Series takes off!

Ellie O'Gorman

Hello Weekend Warriors!

What a season for ocean swimming 2011 has been. With the finale of the Queensland Ocean Swim Series on Sunday 29 May 2011 at Caloundra, we can sit back, dust the sand off our feet and pick the grains of salt off our arms and give ourselves a good pat on the back for another season well done. And a big season at that.

Ocean swimming is just exploding in popularity in Australia, as more and more competitors are lured towards the fascination and simplicity of ocean swimming. The increasing number of entries in ocean swim events in Queensland (which houses many of our nation's BEST beaches!) in 2011 are a good indication that this isn't a passing craze. At the start line of any of the events in this series, you'll see teenagers, office workers, professional athletes, semi-professional athletes, retirees...status and income are immaterial. The only thing that matters is the colour of your cap and your ability to keep your eye on the cans that define the course.

Media Release - Monday April 12th 2010

Budgie smugglers and speed-suits merged with boardies and bikinis on Sunday as over 250 swimmers took to the Coolangatta surf for the inaugural Cooly Classic Ocean Swim.

The revered Snapper Rocks surf relented and competitors were greeted with calm seas and blue skies for the swim start. Nervous excitement soon erupted into a frenzied burst as swimmers plunged into the crystal clear waters.

While weekend warriors were still settling in for the challenge ahead, an elite bunch battled for the lead out front en route to their finish at Kirra Beach.

The late withdrawal of hot favourite and current Australian 5km and 10km open water champion, Trent Grimsey, had left the inaugural honours open to the field and it was 19 year old Brisbane swimmer and Tangalooma runner-up, Jackson Van Der Zant, who emerged from the water first.
